Went out to an issue a customer was having with a brand new iPod.
If you plugged it in, Windows XP could not install drivers for it.. then i noticed it had version 9 of iTunes, downloaded & updated iTunes, plugged the iPod back in, it installed the drivers & was recognised in iTunes.
